The Top Netflix Shows of All Time

3

Oh yes, we’ve all been there: the kids are in bed, the chores are all done, the couch is inviting and Netflix is fired up and ready to go – but then, the choice on offer is so overwhelming. With so much to choose from, it’s hard to decide what is really worth our (precious little) time first.

We know your time is fleeting (hey, there’s always another load of laundry waiting, right?), so we’ve crawled, condensed and presented the top Netflix shows that will truly be worth your time. Most of our list is US-ready but remember: there are a fair few exciting foreign series and movie options out there too, which if you choose to watch, you’ll need a add-on to do so.

#6 – Stranger Things

Have you heard the hype? Stranger Things is the hottest thing from the 80s, via the new millennium! Even if you’ve only glimpsed the title card and theme tune, you’ll know those Stranger Things – at the heart of it, a tale of a group of young friends and their telekinetic foundling, Eleven – is a homage to the best bits of the 80s. If not, you’ll certainly enjoy Winona Ryder’s return to the small screen.

#5 – The Crown

Escape from your own life, and fall head over heels with Queen Elizabeth II and the UK’s Royal Family. We know it sounds crazy – but hear us out. Yes, it’s based on historical fact, yes, you do find yourself empathizing with a woman who’s richer and more powerful than you could ever dream to be… but at the core of the story, there’s a young woman who was thrust into power, leadership and public life against her will. Claire Foy and Matt Smith are fantastic to watch too.

#4 – Black Mirror

If you’re looking for something a little meatier, or something bitesize where you don’t really need to commit to characters and storylines, then Black Mirror is perfect for you. An anthology series, Black Mirror takes a dark glimpse into the ‘what-ifs’ associated with our modern day technology – and turns them (unfailingly) into something way darker and more suspicious than anything you could have ever imagined.

#3 – House of Cards

Modern politics is depressing, but with House of Cards, you get a fascinating, inside look at how politics makes the world spin. We’re guessing a lot of it is based on truth (well, maybe not some of the more gruesome bits – no spoilers here), but as long as you’re not offended by Kevin Spacey (who, despite the recent allegations against him, we have to admit, you’ll have a hard time not being riveted by his portrayal of Frank Underwood), you’re in for one hell of a ride.

#2 – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Follow Kimmy, post-15 years of living undergrounds a ‘Mole Woman’. Having been abducted as a teenager by a mysterious ‘reverend’ (an unmissable Jon Hamm – really), Kimmy’s wide-eyed innocence as she moves to New York to start her new life is by turns endearing, hysterical and screams of the truth. Add in the hilarious Titus Burgess, Carol Kane, and Jane Krakowski, and you have something truly unbreakable and unmissable.

#1 – Bojack Horseman

This is one of those who’ve ever had a low moment or three. Or more. We need you to hear us out on this one because it sounds like a TV show to avoid – but it’s anything but.

Bojack Horseman is both a talking horse and washed up 90s sitcom star, 20 years later, living in Hollywood. So far, so unrelatable. But – as we watch his journey into darkness, self-loathing, self-destruction and alcoholism, every single viewer is sure to identify with him at one point or another…and if not, there are those fantastic puns to watch out for, as well as some hilarious side stories.

And there you have it – new and exciting things to keep us all hooked. So make sure that you catch up on what’s on offer now because soon there might just be a whole load of new and exciting shows to catch up on!
