When it comes to what you put on your face, you probably think you’re pretty picky, don’t you? Most women would like to think that they’re very selective when it comes to their skincare routine. And yet, the truth is that in general, we have no idea what we’re actually buying. Investing in brands that have clear lists of products involved in the making is what you should be doing. is one of those rare instances that informs you about every supplement mix that you’re using on your skin. Whether it’s a small or big amount, everything is listed.
Perhaps you are aware of one or two key ingredients that you’ve heard are good for your skin, like moisturizing agents, antioxidants, or retinols. But when you actually look at the labels for the many manufactured products you put on your skin each day, from cleansers to creams to makeup, you will likely find a whole slew of chemical ingredients that you can’t even pronounce, much less figure out what they do for you. So if you’re on the market for some natural solutions, here are a few DIY ideas to get you back to square one.
The first thing you’ll need to do is assess your skincare needs. Cleansers and moisturizers are the basis of any woman’s beauty arsenal, so that’s a good place to start. But you need to take a moment to determine what your skin type is, keeping in mind that it will change as you age. Even if you suffered from oily, acne-prone skin in adolescence you may find that you’re fighting a whole different beast as you get into your twenties or thirties, with dry patches of combination skin popping up. The point is, any time you’re thinking of changing your beauty routine it’s a good time to reassess the state of your skin in order to pinpoint your current needs. In any case you should do so every five to ten years as a rule.
Now that you have an idea of what your skin requires, you can start to look into natural solutions. And when it comes to facial cleansers, it couldn’t be easier.
Combine:
yogurt (2 parts),
honey (1 part)
lime juice (1 part)
Makes a cleanser that is beneficial to literally any skin type (just mix it with some cornstarch to thicken it up). Of course, you don’t want to make too much at once, and you’ll have to keep it in the fridge so it doesn’t spoil. But if you make a week’s worth at a time you should be fine.
The cleanser will meet multiple needs. Yogurt works as a natural moisturizer, introducing both oils and enzymes to your skin, honey has antibacterial properties that should help those with acne problems, and the acids in lime juice act as an exfoliant, sloughing off dead skin cells. The combination will create the glowing skin you’ve been dreaming of, toxin-free! Throw in a little oatmeal or sugar if you want some extra exfoliation.
As for moisturizer, you can go super simple with an olive oil spray. Just buy high-quality olive oil, put it in a spray bottle, and spritz it on in the shower. Then let the water rinse a bit away so you’re not too greasy, and towel dry. This is great for super dry skin. For those with oilier skin, try mixing the oil with distilled water and some lecithin (an emulsifier that will keep the oil and water from separating). And keep in mind that there are plenty of fruits and veggies that can be used to create masks and scrubs that will provide you with antioxidants, oils, and everything you want for your skin.
Blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, and other types of surgical modification may improve your appearance, but you might be surprised by what you can accomplish naturally on your own by simply changing up your skincare routine. Of course, these techniques can’t remove fatty tissue from your eyelids or take a bump out of your nose. But they can give you the gorgeous glowing skin you covet. And for many women, that’s a lot more appealing than cosmetic surgery for a boost in self-esteem.
